A thief was caught on CCTV attempting to steal the security camera.

Last Updated: 1:23PM GMT 31 Dec 2008

Timothy Coffey, 33, was pictured attempting to prize the camera from inside a block of flats with a crow bar.

His hood offered little disguise and he was easily identified as he lived in neighbouring flats and was already under investigation by the local housing authority.

Coffey, from Halifax, West Yorks., was handed a six-month community order and told to pay £500 towards £2,000 damage he caused, after admitting attempted theft of a camera.

He has also been evicted from his home by in Ackroyd Court by Pennine Housing after rigging up a power cable to his flat to bypass his meter and get free electricity.

At a hearing at Halifax County Court, District Judge Ian Slim said: "There has been brazen activity.
