His ear hair is 25cm long and still growing, but Indian grocer Radhakant Baijpai has no intention of trimming it, no matter what his wife says.

Officially recognised by Guinness in 2003 as having the longest ear hair in the world, Mr Radhakant has carefully coiffed his ear-follicles from what was a record-breaking 13.2cm to their current ear-itching length.

Considered by Mr Radhakant, 58, to be symbol of luck and prosperity, his ear-hair has been growing since he was 18 and has never been cut.

Maintained by a specially prepared blend of herbal shampoo, Mr Radhakant has so far resisted the pleas of his long suffering wife to cut it off.

'She has always been asking me to cut my ear-hair, but since the official record was confirmed by Guinness, she has allowed me to keep it because it is a source of pride to me,' said Mr Radhakant, a resident of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Together, his ear hair tufts measure almost 20 inches long and now he no longer feels that the eyes of the world stare at him when out in public.

He said: 'Before people would tease me, not maliciously, but still would ask me why my I never cut my ear hair.

'Now I tell people with pride about the good fortune that my hair has brought me.

'Such as when I graduated from a prestigious college in my state and when I met my wife, although I must admit my hair was not as long then.'

Mr Radhakant has even stopped wearing rings, so as not to catch his hair and run the risk of losing out on his record.

'Since I came forward to Guinness in 2001, there have been many challengers to my record, but so far none has been confirmed to be longer than mine,' he said.

'I am sure that no one in the world has ear-hair longer than mine and my hair is almost double the length of the first record I set in 2003.

'We are currently waiting for confirmation from Guinness that my ear hair, which stands at 25cm is now the new standard for men with extreme ear hair.'

One of five brothers, Mr Radhakant is far from unique in the family for having hairy ear tufts.

He said: 'My son who is 25 has started to exhibit the same ear-hair growth that I have enjoyed.

'It will be up to him whether he maintains his hair, but I am sure that it has brought me luck in my life.'
