Woman drowns in latrine pit

A Nigerian woman drowned Monday around 8:30 p.m. after falling into a latrine pit while she was using the facility.

PM News reported that the 41-year-old woman, known as Indomie, fell into the human-waste pit behind her home in Lagos when the planks used as a seat gave way while she was defecating.

A witness said the woman’s husband came to her aid when she screamed after the fall, but he abandoned the rescue after almost drowning in the cesspool, too.

Lagos State Fire Safety Service responded and rescuers pulled the woman from the pit but she died a few minutes later. It was not clear how long she had been in the waste.

One source claimed she would not have drowned if the rescue crew had arrived sooner.
