Sports students complete course

MORE than half of the first batch of students from the Singapore Sports School has completed their diplomas via a through-train programme.
Of the 38 students, 23 of them took up the two-year programme after completing Secondary 4 at the Sports School, where they skipped their O levels.
The other 15 have gone on to junior colleges or polytechnics.
The sports management and exercise science programme from the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is offered by private school East Asia Institute of Management (EASB).
Almost all students who chose this route were top athletes selected by the school and offered a scholarship from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
They were picked based on their academic and sporting talent and potential, as well as their aptitude.
This programme offers the most flexibility in terms of sports training as lessons are conducted in the morning or evening at the Sports School campus in Woodlands.
That leaves the afternoon free for their training.
They are also able to go for regular overseas competitions as lessons could be made up later by the lecturers.
One of the athletes who received her diploma last Friday was Sportsgirl of the Year 2008, bowler Jazreel Tan.
The 19-year-old who transferred to the Sports School in Secondary 3 in 2005, said she chose the AUT diploma route as it gave her the most flexibility in continuing with her training.
